Markdown Mode for Confluence
Support and documentation
How to install and use Markdown Mode for Confluence, answers to common questions, known limitations and how to reach us.
1. Installation
Markdown Mode for Confluence is installed from the Atlassian Marketplace by a Confluence site administrator:
- In Confluence Cloud, open Settings (gear icon) → Apps → Explore more apps.
- Search for Markdown Mode for Confluence and choose Get app.
- Review the requested permissions (
read:page:confluence,write:page:confluence) and confirm.
After installation, every user of the site sees the two actions in the page ••• → Apps menu. There is nothing to configure. Uninstalling removes nothing from your pages: everything published with the app is ordinary Confluence content.
2. Getting started
- Open a Confluence page or blog post (view mode, not the editor).
- Click ••• (More actions) at the top right of the page, then Apps.
- Choose Edit in Markdown, or New child page from Markdown.
- Write or paste Markdown. The preview shows what Confluence will publish.
- Press Publish or Create page, or Cmd/Ctrl+Enter.
Layout buttons: Markdown (editor only), Split and Preview. Copy as Markdown copies the whole page.
New child page: type a title, or leave the title empty and start the text with # Title. That first heading becomes the page title and is not repeated in the page.
If your browser blocks copying, a box opens with the text already selected: press Cmd+C (Mac) or Ctrl+C (Windows, Linux).
3. Keyboard shortcuts (inside the editor)
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Cmd/Ctrl+Enter | Publish / Create page |
| Cmd/Ctrl+B / I | Bold / italic |
| Cmd/Ctrl+K | Link |
| Cmd/Ctrl+E | Inline code |
| Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+X | Strikethrough |
| Esc | Close (asks first if you have unsaved changes) |
4. Markdown reference
The app supports standard CommonMark plus GitHub tables, task lists (- [ ]), strikethrough (~~) and autolinks. Confluence-only elements are written as short tags:
| Confluence element | Markdown |
|---|---|
| Page layout (columns) | ::::layout, then one :::column{width="50"} … ::: per column, then :::: |
| Mention | :mention[@Ana Pop]{id="…"} (keep the id) |
| Status | :status[IN REVIEW]{color="blue"} |
| Date | :date[2026-10-15] (edit the label to change the date) |
| Emoji | :emoji[:rocket:] |
| Smart link | :card[https://…] |
| Panel | :::panel{type="info"} … ::: (info, note, warning, success, error) |
| Expand | :::expand{title="Details"} … ::: |
| Protected block (macros, attachments, decisions…) | ::adf[Macro: …]{data="…"}, shown in the editor as a small "kept" label: move or delete it, but don't edit it |
By default, a single line break inside a paragraph becomes a space (CommonMark). Tick Single line breaks are kept (GitHub style) to keep them as line breaks.
5. FAQ
- Why not a Markdown toggle inside the Confluence editor?
- Atlassian does not let apps replace the built-in editor (see CONFCLOUD-68272). The app opens a focused editor from the page ••• → Apps menu and publishes straight into the page.
- Do readers need the app?
- No. The app publishes normal Confluence content. Everyone sees an ordinary page, in search, in notifications and in the mobile apps.
- Does it create a new page version?
- Yes. Each publish is a normal version with the message "Edited in Markdown Mode". Page history, compare and restore work as usual.
- What happens to macros, images and attachments?
- They are kept as protected blocks and published back exactly as they were. Edit macros in the Confluence editor.
- What if someone else is editing the page?
- Before publishing, the app checks whether a newer version was published since you opened it and lets you reload or publish anyway. If the Confluence editor holds unpublished changes, the app warns you first: Confluence merges a new version into that draft and may override it if they differ a lot.
- Where is my data stored? Do you see my pages?
- Nowhere outside Confluence. The app has no backend: it runs in your browser inside Confluence and calls the Confluence API as you. We (PPFTEC S.R.L.) never receive your page content. See the privacy policy.
- What permissions does it need?
read:page:confluenceandwrite:page:confluence. It can only do what you can already do: if you cannot edit a page, the editor opens read-only.- How much does it cost?
- Every Confluence Cloud site gets a 30-day free trial through the Atlassian Marketplace. After that it is $5 per month for sites with up to 10 users, and $0.50 per user per month from 11 to 100 users, with lower per-user rates above 100 users. Billing is handled by Atlassian; see the pricing tab on the app's Marketplace listing for the full table.
6. Troubleshooting
- "Read-only: your Confluence permissions do not allow editing this page"
- You need edit permission on the page and in the space. Ask the space administrator.
- "Someone published a new version of this page after you opened it"
- Choose Reload (lose my edits) or Publish anyway.
- "This page has unpublished changes in the Confluence editor"
- Someone has edits open in the Confluence editor. Publish or discard them there first, then publish from Markdown Mode.
- "Markdown Mode for Confluence needs an active subscription"
- The site's subscription has lapsed. A Confluence administrator can renew it under Settings → Apps → Manage apps.
- The actions are missing
- The actions are in the Apps submenu of the page ••• menu, in view mode. Ask your administrator whether the app is installed.
7. Known limitations
- Confluence Cloud only. Confluence Data Center and Server are not supported.
- Live docs, drafts and archived pages open read-only in this version (they can be copied as Markdown).
- Page comments cannot be edited in Markdown yet.
- The app cannot add a Markdown mode inside Confluence's own editor. It opens from the page ••• → Apps menu.
- Tags for Confluence-only elements (for example
:status[…]) are not standard Markdown. Other Markdown tools show them as plain text. - Macros, attachments and decisions are kept as protected blocks: they can be moved or deleted, not edited, in Markdown.
- The editor can take a few seconds to open the first time.
